Yesterday was the PSAT. It didn't seem very difficult, especially in light of AP tests and SAT. I finished with extra time left, so my strategy was basically:
- On math I did the problem as many different ways as possible. Since you'll be bored out of your mind (if you have extra time) I recommend trying to solve everything using logarithms and a slide rule.
- On reading I just reread questions and eliminated every other answer. To some extent playing "there must be a reason this answer is wrong" is fun; it's fun to the same extent that playing "guilty until proven innocent" is fun when you are a Texan governor.
- On writing I read the questions as if I were speaking them to myself, it really helps reveal the awkward phrasing that might be more difficult to catch when reading. You can also read it out in different voices to pass time, but then I definitely suggest you keep quite while doing it, so that you don't get shipped away to the loony house and get your scores invalidated.
- The most important thing is to be relaxed while taking the test. A haughty sense of personal superiority over your peers helps too.
